Talking Drum Café

“Building Community One Cup One Human Being At A Time”

Gasoline Alley since 1999

The Talking Drum Café is the latest incarnation of Al’s Daily Grind coffee. Al’s Daily Grind coffee was founded by the factory workers of marty’s juice creation at gasoline alley, following the sale of a portfolio company of meadowbrook lane…a long story…the coffee company began as a worker owned mail order enterprise. the fellas in the plant came up with the idea of promoting fair trade coffee over the internet and mail order…over the years, the coffee was served backstage at the david letterman show, beastie boys concerts, the grateful dead, among other venues…during the inititative to legalize casino gaming in massachusetts, of which we developed a public awareness campaign opposing such an effort, the coffee company took a ‘back seat’, it languished in the portfolio for a while until three students from an area community college asked us to ‘give us a chance’ at a company…we decided to ‘give’ them the al’s daily grind brand…with the hopes that someday other local companies would ‘give’ outdated or brands and/or products that they were not investing in to local community college entrepreneurs…the students took the brand, worked it for a while and ultimately, one of them created the idea of the talking drum cafe…moved the brand from gasoline alley to an experimental ‘mercado’ in the spanish section of holyoke, mass…today, it is an ‘outreach’ of gasoline alley..

Talking Drum Café (TDC) sells 100% fair trade and 100% organic coffee. The café also has a computer center with free wireless internet access. The new café model is a hybrid between a traditional café and a community center focused on grass roots organizing. TDC facilitating workshops that address community issues ranging from home ownership and financial literacy to immigration law and health. Among the many events to be held are Jazz, Spoken Word poetry, and community center hours with tutors for high school students. The Café’s mission is “Building Community One Cup One Human Being At A Time”.

We are hopeful of its success…
